Since the concept of creation itself has been created, we have had a very concrete idea of the creator v.s. the content. For example, a writer creates stories– therefore they are the creator. In the same manner, those who read the writer’s works are consumers. It can even be said that the role of a content creator is similar to that of a consultant. It is possible that the consumer may come across a problem that they cannot solve and enlist the help of the consultant.
However, what for instance, if there was a more effective solution? In today’s world, the stark divide between the creator and the customer no longer exist. By inviting the client into the decision-making process, they have a stake, in the end result themselves.
When we can claim a stake in a project or a product, we want to deliver the best product possible. It is important to include the client in the process, as it will allow the client to believe that the end result is theirs as well.
In this collaborative state, both the client and the creator are co-creators, each with a set of skills to bring to the table. Through the very nature of co-creator and crowd innovation, we can find the answers together much effectively than finding solutions alone. What’s more is that these differences in thoughts and opinions create stronger solutions.
Today, in particular, we all strive to be a part of the decision process governing our lives. For example, in today’s education system teachers allow students to have an active role in their learning.
During this process, it is important to ask how we can facilitate collaboration between the creator and the consumer. While it is important to include the input of the client in the decision-making process, it is important to establish yourself as the expert in the subject matter. By including the client, they will be the project’s biggest supporter as they will believe that the project is theirs as well.
Despite this, there are times where collaboration and co-creation would be inappropriate. In times like this, it is best to move ahead as the expert. If you are an expert in a trade, for example, it is incredibly difficult to collaborate with a customer on that trade especially if they are not knowledgeable in that area. That being said, there are still many opportunities where the creator and the owner can work together to create the best possible outcome.
You can be apart of the collaboration process by giving people the tools and equipment they need to become successful.
